I'm a visual effects supervisor, author and educator. Over the past two decades I've supervised the visual effects on more than 40 films and series, including Marty Supreme, Uncut Gems, Hereditary, The Lighthouse, and The Wolf of Wall Street. My work on Boardwalk Empire received a Primetime Emmy Award and two VES Awards, with a third nomination for The Men Who Built America.
I came to visual effects in my mid-thirties, teaching myself 3D as a hobby while having a career as a composer — I studied at Juilliard and wrote music for theater and various ensembles. The full switch happened at 40, when I joined ILM in Singapore, working on films including Iron Man, Star Trek, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and Terminator Salvation. After moving to New York, I joined Brainstorm Digital as compositing supervisor, and then became Brainstorm's VFX supervisor, leading visual effects for directors including the Safdie brothers, Ari Aster, Robert Eggers, James Gray and Joe Wright.
Alongside supervising, much of my work has been in leadership and teaching. I've headed compositing departments of forty-plus artists and built studio-wide training and artist-development programs, and I've been an adjunct professor at the School of Visual Arts since 2013. I've also written two books with Routledge/Focal — The Filmmaker's Guide to Visual Effects and The Complete Guide to Photorealism — now used as course texts at universities and film schools including NYU, USC, and Northwestern.
Right now, my focus is on generative AI in production. I work at the point where these tools meet the realities of a working pipeline — where the hype meets the shot that has to be finished — and I teach artists and filmmakers to use them with control and intention rather than guesswork. I build courses on generative AI for VFX, and I write and speak regularly on where the craft is heading.
